Guidelines for Submitting Images for Publication

DAN accepts digital, film transparency and photographic print images in the formats detailed below.

DIGITAL CAMERA & DIGITAL IMAGE SPECS

DAN will accept digital images if:

  • The camera used is rated at 4 - 8 (+) megapixels, and the image was created with the camera in high-resolution mode. Typical acceptable image size will be (for instance) 2000 x 1300 x 100 or 2000 x 1250 x 300 - or larger. File size for publication-quality images will be somewhere in the 7 - 17+ MB range.
  • The images have been scanned from high-quality transparencies or prints on a graphic arts industry / publication-quality scanner and the resulting scanned images are at least 7-1/2" x 6" (2250 x1800) x at least 300 dpi, in TIF, EPS or PSD format.
  • The resulting images will be large (7MB and up), so please submit electronic images on CD or DVD rather than via email. We prefer to receive disc media in Mac format, although we will accept PC-formatted disks as well.

DAN will not accept digital images if:

  • The image in question is (or was originally) in JPG, GIF, (etc.) web-oriented format. SCANNED IMAGES IN JPG OR GIF FORMAT ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR PUBLICATION USAGE AND CANNOT BE ACCEPTED. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE OF IMAGES OF WEBSITE ORIGIN.
  • Scanned image is (or was originally) less than 300 dpi.

FILM-BASED IMAGE SPECS

  • We prefer to receive digital images on disc as described above.
  • Second choice would be high-quality duplicate transparencies (slides). We will ask for the original transparencies, if needed.
  • If prints from film are to be submitted, they should be of high quality and preferably be 8" x 10". Do not submit prints made from digital sources; instead, send the digital file.
  • Images submitted to Alert Diver should be in sharp focus, with good color balance, good lighting and good composition and be free of either "blown out" highlights or too-dark shadow areas. Images should not be dark overall, unless they were taken on a night dive, of course.
