Continuing Medical Education (CME)
Frequently Asked Questions

For whom are DAN's Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine CME courses designed?
DAN's Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine courses are designed primarily for physicians, emergency medical personnel, paramedics, and nurses. Instructors, dive masters, and other non-medical dive-related personnel might also find the courses of value.

What kind of educational credit will I receive by participating in a DAN CME activity?
Any DAN educational activity that is primarily planned for physicians will request Category 1 credit from the American Medical Association (AMA) and American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Certificates of attendance will be provided at all activities.

Will DAN's Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine course prepare me to be a referral physician for DAN?
The DAN physician referral service falls under the Medical Department of the Divers Alert Network. The purpose of the physician referral service is to refer scuba divers or potential scuba divers to doctors knowledgeable and trained in diving medicine. Inclusion in the physician referral database requires completion of an introductory course in diving medicine and a special form. DAN's Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine course would fulfill that course requirement.

What continuing medical education activities does DAN offer?
DAN typically offers a Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine course twice a year... once in the fall and once in the spring at an offshore resort location. Lectures are held half-days Sunday through Friday. Optional diving is available with the DAN group. Every other year, DAN offers a condensed course at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. Upcoming Courses & Events

What type of certification does DAN offer in their continuing medical education activities?
DAN does not offer certification in their continuing medical education activities. At this time, the only DAN activities that receive certification are the courses being offered by DAN's Training Department.

How can I get on the DAN continuing medical education mailing list?
The CME Department at DAN maintains a mailing list of persons interested in receiving all continuing medical education activity brochures offered by DAN. Please contact us by telephone at (919) 684-2948 x609, or complete our CME Mailing List Request Form. We will be happy to place you on our mailing list. Please notify DAN CME directly if there is a change in your address.

Does DAN offer any CME activities within the continental U.S.? If so, how often?
Yes, every other year we offer the Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine course on the Duke University Medical Center campus in Durham, North Carolina. This activity is typically held on a Thursday through Saturday at the end of July or beginning of August. An optional tour of the Divers Alert Network headquarters and/or of the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology at Duke University Medical Center is offered along with special rates for groups attending from the same institution or organization.

Do DAN Members automatically receive DAN CME activity brochures?
We do not mail our CME activity brochures to all DAN members. Our CME mailing list is maintained exclusively by the Continuing Medical Education Department at DAN. The DAN website carries an up-to-date listing of educational activities. DAN's Alert Diver magazine also carries an expanded description of upcoming educational events.

I can't afford to take a whole week off work to attend the DAN Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine course. Do you offer this activity over a shorter period of time for the same amount of credit?
Yes, the DAN Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine course is offered every other year over a three-day period typically on a Thursday through Saturday at the end of July or beginning of August. It is held on the Duke University Medical Center campus in Durham, North Carolina.

I want to attend an Oxygen Training Course. Does DAN CME coordinate these courses?
Sometimes DAN CME will include an optional Oxygen Provider Course with our Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Course. These courses are coordinated through the Training Department at DAN. Please contact Training directly for more information.
