Continuing Medical Education (CME)
DAN’s continuing medical education (CME) staff strives to assist physicians and other health care providers in obtaining new information that will lead to better quality and availability of care to the diving community worldwide. The internationally recognized resources of DAN and its affiliation with numerous institutions serving hyperbaric medicine provide cutting-edge medical and research information.
New this year, DAN is offering two courses each with up to 26 hours of CME credits!
DAN UHMS Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Course – Core Concepts – Week 1
May 17-24, 2025 at Anse Chastanet, St. Lucia
- This is our traditional class which has been offered in some form since 1983. The program focuses on diving and hyperbaric medicine with emphasis on the latest scientific literature in the field.
- It is an introductory course that is intended to build up essential knowledge of diving medicine.
- It is designed primarily for physicians. However, emergency medical personnel, paramedics, nurses, and professionals with an interest in dive medicine are welcome.

DAN UHMS Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Course – Special Topics – Week 2
May 24-31, 2025 at Anse Chastanet, St. Lucia
- This new course will offer deeper dives into specific dive medicine topics as well as clinical hyperbaric medicine. There will also be more in-depth information about diving and decompression physiology covered by renowned researchers.
- This course is intended to add knowledge to an existing foundation of diving medicine.
- You should have completed the Core class in the past or have specific training in diving medicine to join this next-level course. It is acceptable to take both classes back-to-back if you choose.

Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Courses
The accredited courses include lectures, case presentations, support materials, and both formal and informal discussion sessions with faculty.
Jointly provided by Divers Alert Network and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, the course is designed primarily for physicians. However, emergency medical personnel, paramedics, nurses and professionals, as well as instructors, divemasters and nonmedical, diving-related personnel with an interest in dive medicine may also find the course valuable.
The program focuses on diving and hyperbaric medicine with emphasis on the latest scientific literature in the field. The course features lectures, case presentations and support materials as well as both formal and informal discussion sessions with faculty.
Through lectures, case presentations, printed support materials, and both formal and informal discussion sessions with the faculty, it is anticipated that attendees completing this course will be able to discuss and clinically apply facts relevant to scheduled topics. Upon completion, course participants should also benefit from a broader understanding of current issues and increased familiarity with recent, relevant scientific literature in diving and hyperbaric medicine. Learning will be reinforced by case reports from the DAN Medical Services Call Center (MSCC) Quality Assurance archives, examples from recent and ongoing diving research, and from the personal experience of the faculty.
At the end of this course attendees should be able to discuss and clinically apply facts relevant to:
- Medical and physical fitness to dive
- Diving safety issues and current research
- Hyperbaric medicine: applications, protocols, and mechanisms
- Decompression physiology and pathophysiology
- Diving injuries and their management
- Controversies in diving medicine
