2025 AUAS/DAN Diving Medicine Scholarship

Applications are now open for the AUAS/DAN Diving Medicine Scholarship. This annual scholarship, a collaboration between the Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences (AUAS) and DAN, supports research that expands our understanding of human physiology in the marine environment. This scholarship offers a unique opportunity for researchers to contribute to the field of diving medicine. Proposals may be submitted through DAN’s application portal for grants and internships.

Key Details

  • Proposal Deadline: October 15, 2025
  • Eligibility: Proposal submissions will be considered from individuals who possess: a) A PhD, MD, DO, or Master’s degree; b) Previous publications in the peer-reviewed literature; and, c) A record of interest and/or involvement with diving medical research. 
  • Award Period: Up to one year
  • Budget: $50,000 maximum
  • Proposal submission: The proposal and two letters of support must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file to DAN’s portal for grants and internships: DANResearch.secure-platform.com.
  • Proposal review: Proposals will be peer-reviewed by a panel of the AUAS/DAN Medical Scholarship Committee for scientific merit, project feasibility, and appropriateness for funding.
  • Award notification: Award notification will be forwarded electronically to the applicants.
  • Permissions: Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval of human subject’s studies, collecting permits, animal care and use approval and other procedures must follow Institutional policy and regulations.
  • Progress reports and publications: A final report is required for all projects and must be electronically submitted no later than one year from start of the AUAS/DAN Scholarship. All publications resulting from this fellowship supported by the AUAS and DAN must include an acknowledgment.

I. Cover Page

  10. Signature and date affirming the following statement: “I am applying for AUAS/DAN Diving Medical Research Scholarship support as described above.”

II. Proposal Body (Not to exceed four pages):

  1. Project title
  2. Abstract (300 words maximum)
  3. Introduction, including appropriate background, rationale, and support from the published medical/scientific literature.
  4. Goal and objectives, including clear statement of central question or problem and the major elements comprising the objectives to address the goal. What are the hypotheses? 
  5. Methods, including summary of approach, procedures, experimental designs, technical methods, and/or statistical treatment. Indicate the type of equipment to be used and the frequency of its need.
  6. Work plan and time schedule, providing dates and locations and outline of schedule for completion of work.
  7. Significance/relevance, explaining the anticipated contribution and significance of this project to diving and hyperbaric medicine.
