Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DAN Student Membership Program?

The DAN Student Membership Program provides access to dive medical professionals, online safety information, and up to US$25,000 in Student Dive Accident Insurance to help protect you against the costs of a covered diving accident occurring during your NAUI entry-level training.

What does Student Dive Accident Insurance Cover?

Student Dive Accident Insurance covers any diving activity, in or out of the water, that is necessary to meet the standards for receiving an entry-level diving certification for open circuit scuba or breath-hold diving, including, but not limited to, donning or removing dive equipment, entering and exiting the water, swimming, and diving. A diving activity begins the moment the student lifts their BCDs and continues until the moment their equipment is placed on the ground. A covered dive (includes breath-hold diving and snorkeling), begins the moment the student enters the water and ends the moment they exit the water.

How much does DAN Student Membership cost?

Since 1980, DAN’s mission has been to make every dive accident injury free. Consistent with this goal, DAN’s Student Membership Program is fully funded by DAN.

Who is eligible to enroll in the DAN Student Membership Program?

To be eligible for the program, NAUI entry-level students must:

  • Meet minimum age requirement, ages 8 or older and under age 70. Divers age 70 and older must receive a written exemption from DAN.
  • Be enrolled in a NAUI entry-level course.
  • Reside in a region where DAN provides coverage.
  • Not be a current or former DAN member.
  • Not be enrolled in another DAN Dive Accident Insurance plan.

What if I don’t meet the program eligibility requirements?

If an eligibility requirement is not met, the DAN Student Membership Program offer will not appear at the start of your NAUI course. Ineligible students will not be able to participate.

Is this program valid for entry-level freedive training?

Yes, the DAN Student Membership Program is open to entry-level scuba and breath-hold divers.

How do NAUI entry-level students enroll in DAN Student Membership?

NAUI entry-level students self-enroll at the start of their online E-Learning in NAUI CORE. When prompted, each student must click “Accept” (the default setting is “Decline”).

Once enrolled, will I receive an email confirmation from NAUI or DAN?

Yes, NAUI entry-level students who enroll in the DAN Student Membership Program will receive communications from both NAUI and DAN. A student will receive a system email confirmation from NAUI and a system confirmation in CORE. A DAN badge will be visible on your “My Courses” page in CORE. Enrolled entry-level students will be subscribed to a DAN email journey that will offer additional free safety resources during the course.

When do DAN Student Membership benefits become effective?

DAN Student Membership benefits become effective when you enroll as part of your NAUI open water diver course. Once enrolled, you will receive a confirmation email that includes a digital Student Membership card and Student ID number.
