FAQs

Q. Is DAN TravelAssist a DAN membership benefit?

Yes. DAN Membership includes a package of medical transportation benefits that are available to members who travel more than 50 miles from home. To be eligible for these benefits, you must be suffering from an emergency medical condition that requires immediate transportation from the place where the medical emergency occurs to the nearest appropriate medical facility for treatment.

Due to the stress that COVID-19 has placed on medical facilities and evacuation service providers worldwide, members should know that emergency medical transportation, access to medical facilities and other benefits may be delayed or unavailable due to government action or other circumstances beyond DAN’s control.

Q. Do DAN membership benefits cover evacuation expenses resulting from a COVID-19 illness?

No, expenses for services, supplies, treatment or transport related to a pandemic, epidemic, or exposure to a contagious infectious disease are excluded.

DAN continues to operate 24/7, and DAN Member Services specialists are available to assist members with their covered, non-coronavirus-related, travel and medical evacuation needs. But please note this is a rapidly evolving situation, and DAN may not have the latest information about border closings, mandatory quarantines or other government or health agency actions that might restrict your ability to travel and/or DAN’s ability to assist with emergency medical evacuation in certain countries and regions. Please contact DAN Member Services at +1 (800) 446-2671 or  for more information.

Q. What happens if the borders close where I’m visiting and I need medical evacuation not related to COVID-19?

DAN has limited ability to provide evacuation services in countries or regions that have been affected by the pandemic, including COVID-19 “hotspots” within the United States and Canada. Since each situation will be different (varying by country, the reason for the evacuation, the nature of the member’s injury or illness, etc.) you should contact DAN to inquire about assistance. While DAN will be unable to effect evacuations when prevented by government mandate, where covered, every effort will be made to work with local authorities to facilitate transportation to a place where you can get needed medical care.

Please note that emergency medical transportation and travel assistance benefits exclude coverage of expenses for services, supplies, treatment or transport related to a pandemic, epidemic, or exposure to a contagious infectious disease including COVID-19.

Q. What will happen if I contract COVID-19 on a trip? Will I be quarantined or evacuated?

These decisions will be made by local authorities, government officials and medical professionals in the location where you become ill. Some are treating in place (where you contract the illness) while others are evacuating infected persons to central facilities or their home countries. Regardless, the current protocol in many locations is to require a quarantine of at least 14 days following exposure. For those who test positive for COVID-19, the period could be substantially longer (depending on the length of a person’s illness), and you will likely be quarantined for an extended period of time (either in a facility or self-quarantine).

Emergency medical transportation and travel assistance benefits exclude coverage of expenses for services, supplies, treatment or transport related to a pandemic, epidemic, or exposure to a contagious infectious disease including COVID-19.

Q. What if I travel to a high-risk country and need medical evacuation?

First, DAN advises against traveling to high-risk countries. DAN has limited ability to assist with services in some countries due to local impacts of COVID-19.

Since each situation will be different (varying by country, the reason for the evacuation, the nature of the injury or illness, etc.) you should contact DAN for assistance. While DAN will be unable to effect emergency medical evacuations when prevented by government mandate, every effort will be made to work with local authorities to facilitate transportation to a place where you can get needed medical care.

Again, emergency medical transportation and travel assistance benefits exclude coverage of expenses for services, supplies, treatment or transport related to a pandemic, epidemic, or exposure to a contagious infectious disease including COVID-19.
