On a sun-drenched afternoon in the Bahamas, my friends and I sailed out for what we thought would be a routine spearfishing trip. Seemingly crafted for photographers, nudibranchs are slow-moving and vibrant and have adapted to curious shapes and sizes. Aside from their fascinating appearance and cute demeanor, they also play an essential role in science and have been the focus of study for many decades.
At up to 330,000 pounds (149,685 kilograms) and 110 feet (33.5 meters) long, they are the largest creatures to have ever lived.
