Diving Florida’s Springs

Florida is home to the world’s largest concentration of freshwater springs — the Florida Geological Survey has identified more than 1,000 statewide. There are about 33 first-magnitude springs discharging at least 100 cubic feet (2.8 cubic meters) of water per second.

Preventing Mask Squeeze

Imagine descending to a beautiful reef. The water is clear, fish glide past, and then you feel a strange pull on your face, like the mask is trying to suction itself onto your eyes. When you surface your eyes are red, swollen, and possibly bruised. The cause was mask squeeze, a common but preventable dive injury.
