Professional Liability Insurance: A 2025 Guide to Continuing Education and Continuous Coverage

As a dive professional, your role goes beyond just leading dives — it’s about creating safe, memorable experiences for others while protecting your divers, your business, and yourself from unnecessary risk. That’s why DAN continues to invest in education and insurance support that empowers you to do your job with confidence and care.

Continuing Education: Boat Diving E-Learning

The dive itself may get the spotlight, but the boat ride to and from the site is one of the most overlooked yet risky phases of any dive operation. Before divers even enter the water, the boat ride introduces a range of safety concerns that professionals must be prepared to manage. That’s why DAN Risk Retention Group (RRG) has launched a new e-learning course, Continuing Education for Dive Professionals: Course 2 – Boat Diving, as part of the Continuing Education for Dive Professionals program.

This free, self-paced e-learning aims to raise awareness about common safety issues and highlight how seemingly minor oversights can escalate into larger incidents aboard dive boats. The course covers the following topics, among others:

  • Dive Boat Hazards
  • Pre-Trip Considerations
  • Dive Site Briefings
  • Reboarding
  • Liveaboards

Whether you’re a seasoned instructor or new to leading charters, this course is designed to sharpen your awareness and help you avoid preventable issues before they happen.

In addition to the 5% savings that DAN members already receive, members can earn an extra discount of approximately 5% on their individual or group professional liability premium by completing the course. To qualify for the extra savings, the e-learning course must be completed before you renew your professional liability insurance policy. Refunds will not be issued to professionals who renew their policy and then take the course.

Why Continuous Coverage is Essential

Even with the best risk management protocols in place, accidents can still happen. And when they do, liability insurance is your safety net. DAN RRG’s professional liability insurance protects you from the financial and legal consequences of covered events made against you as a dive professional – provided you maintain continuous coverage.

Lapsed coverage means lost protection. DAN RRG’s Professional Liability and Group Professional Liability policies are claims-made policies, meaning that coverage is triggered when a claim is made against the insured or reported to the underwriters during the policy period. The claim must be made during the policy period or any extended reporting period and must occur after the designated retroactive date. To be covered under a claims-made policy, you must have continuous (uninterrupted) coverage from the time of the incident that led to the claim to the time the claim is filed.

That’s why it’s critical to renew your policy on time and ensure your coverage never lapses. To help you stay on top of both continuing education and insurance, DAN is offering a discounted liability insurance premium for pros who complete the e-learning before renewing.
