DAN Celebrates Young Scholars at OWUSS Awards Weekend

DAN representatives recently attended the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society’s (OWUSS) 52nd Annual Awards Weekend in New York City. The event celebrated the Society’s interns and scholars, including the incoming cohort of DAN interns, and gathered professionals from across underwater disciplines.

Supporting Future Leaders in Diving

DAN and OWUSS share a longstanding commitment to fostering the next generation of leaders in diving and underwater-related fields. Through internships focused on hands-on, real-world experiences, both organizations support young professionals in developing practical skills while contributing to the dive community.

Established in 1999, the DAN Internship Program offers interns opportunities to participate in a range of activities that promote dive safety, including fieldwork, research studies, communications, training program development, and other initiatives. Since 1974, OWUSS has awarded scholarships and internships that expose young people to a variety of aquatic and marine experiences, supporting their personal and professional growth.

DAN’s 2026 intern cohort includes two positions presented in partnership with OWUSS: the Dr. Glen H. Egstrom DAN/OWUSS Divers’ Health and Safety Research Internship and the DAN/OWUSS Divers’ Safety Internship.

OWUSS Awards Weekend

The 52nd Annual Awards Weekend featured several events recognizing the achievements of interns and scholars. It began with a welcome dinner that brought together Society members and guests. The following day, the OWUSS Symposium, held at The Explorers Club, provided returning interns and scholars an opportunity to share highlights from their experiences. The weekend concluded with the Awards Ceremony, also hosted at The Explorers Club. During the ceremony, the 2025 interns and scholars presented videos showcasing their accomplishments through the program, and the incoming class of OWUSS and DAN interns was formally introduced.

DAN team members in attendance included Brian Harper, vice president of marketing and communications, along with the organization’s 2026 interns: Trystan Cavitt, Jacqueline Keleher, Juliana McKenna, and Alexa Rand. They were joined by 2025 DAN Outreach Intern Anna Krylova.
